Jack & Jill competitions are designed to highlight skills in spontaneous Zouk dancing and the ability to dance well with a variety of partners. In this division, the dancers will be judge on their Timing, Technique, Team-work for all levels and additionally their Musicality for Intermediate competitors only).
Competitors enter as individuals, are randomly assigned partners, and dance to music selected by the Zouk Sensation Team and screened by the Head Judge. Male competitors must enter as “leaders” and female competitors must enter as “followers.” Depending on the number of registered dancers there might be 3 heats or less: Prelims, Semi-Finals and Finals. Each heat consists of a minimum of 3 different songs. Excluding the Finals heat, all other previous heats consists of at least 3 partner changes.
**Important update for all competitors**: BZDC has approved Jack and Jill degendered competitions where it allows Jack and Jill competitors to compete as a leader or follower in his/her current division (not bellow). Competitor must be a lead or follow only for that entire event weekend.
A person should compete in Novice if they have earned fewer than 15 Novice points and do not otherwise qualify for the Intermediate category. If a person is competing in the Intermediate Strictly competition but does not meet the Intermediate Jack & Jill requirements individually (ie: they are dancing up because of their partner), that person may compete in this category.
A person should compete in Intermediate if they have already competed at the Intermediate level and hold Intermediate points (and don’t qualify for a higher category) or they have earned 15 or more Novice points. Depending on the number of dancers the Finals may be done as ‘Spotlight’, which means only one couple will dance at the time.
PLEASE NOTE: each category will only proceed if 5 or more leaders and 5 or more followers register for the relevant category.
All styles of Brazilian Zouk dance to 4/4 time music. The timing defined as “Tum-Tic-Tic” where in a full 8 counts the “Tum” step must be on the down beat.It is accepted that your long step may be on any down beat on a full 8 count phrase.
Zouk Sensation 2019 Dance Festival is a Brazillian Zouk Dance Council (“BZDC”) Registry Event. As such, points are awarded to the winners and place getters (and possibly finalists) of our Jack n Jill Competitions.
The BZDC records and tracks points for every competitor and these points are used to identify the category a person should compete in. There must be a minimum number of five couples per category for points to be recorded.

We will consider your petition and approve or deny your petition based on your reasons and dance history. Please note, if you have petitioned to dance at a higher division at one event you may still need to petition at future events. The guidelines for each category are set out on this page. If you want to enter a category for which you do not meet the entry requirements stated or want to change categories, you may submit a petition by sending us an email with a brief explanation of the reason(s) for your request.

Strictly competitions are designed to highlight skills in spontaneous Zouk dancing with a chosen partner. Competitors enter as couples and dance to music selected by the Zouk Sensation Team and screened by the Head Judge. Matching outfits are allowed, although it will not be marked by the judges.

Anyone who has a Full pass, Party pass, Beginners pass or Kizomba pass for Zouk Sensation 2019 are eligible to participate. Enrolments close before 22nd Feb 2019 at 10am. Stay tuned for registration information.
